Chapter Summary: Drinking water continuously is very important for singers because it keeps the body hydrated. When the body is hydrated, it can create enough mucus to lubricate the vocal folds and keep them from drying out to help prevent nodules. Singers need to be careful how they speak in every day life and choices about medications, smoking, eating and exercise habits because this can have an even greater impact on their voice than their singing habits. When exercising, singers need to be careful not to grunt and put extra pressure on the vocal cords because this can damage the voice. Physical health is very important and affects all aspects of life; physical appearance is important as well in the performance world but should not be obsessed over. Singers should do their best to look presentable and be healthy but should also accept themselves for who they are. When singers lose weight, they need to learn more correct breathing techniques so that they do not result to straining the voice to create the same sound they had before losing weight. Singers need to know their voice and develop strong vocal technique to help them when singing while they are sick. The singer should know themselves and figure out a lifestyle that they know will allow them to be happy. Singers should have a balance of confidence and humility to allow them to be able to perform well but also see where they need to improve.
Key Concepts: Singers need to make healthy, balanced choices in all aspects of their life. Singers need to know themselves and their voice so that they will know what they are capable of and what will make them happy.
Key Terms: nodules, polyps
Making Connections: There is so much in this chapter I can connect to. I need to remember that my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self relates directly to my singing. I need to work to create a better balance in my life and understand that when I am more healthy in all of these areas, my singing will benefit as well.
