Luke Shepherd SS Chapter 12

Chapter Summary: This chapter reiterates a lot of what has been said already about needing to find and follow your own path. We need to ultimately take responsibility for ourselves, our decisions, and accept the consequences. Our voice is our instrument and we need to take responsibility for it, just like everything else in our lives. I liked how he said that singers should generally be open and flexible enough to try anything a conductor or director asks them to do. Being flexible is SO important. Not to say we should be pushovers, but nobody wants to work with an inflexible, arrogant singer. The other thing is that if you're going to talk the talk you have to walk the walk and be a very prepared and vigilant colleague. This chapter talks a lot about what it means to be a good colleague, to always be prepared, learning how to work with people, and how to both give and take.
Key Concept: Be flexible, open minded, and take responsibility for your own decisions.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: Having been on both sides of the production, as a director, composer, and as a performer, I can understand how important some of his advice in this chapter is. It is super crucial for me as a director to ALWAYS be prepared for rehearsals because otherwise I lose credibility with my singers and I can never demand that they prepared if I'm not myself. I also see how frustrating it can be working with a singer who is inflexible or unwilling to experiment and try new things. It negatively affects the performance and it can even strain relationships. It is so important to always have an open mind!
