Chapter Summary: Many people often think of success as achieving something (usually fame or fortune). In reality, success is having the courage to follow our passions and uncover our naked voice. Success comes through relentless desire to improve and enjoy the journey, rather then always reaching for the destination. As singers, we need to realize that we each have something that is individual and unique, as well as ever changing. We should not strive to be somebody that we are not and instead embrace who were are at the current time. We shouldn't hold on to things that we used to do in the past, and instead embrace the changes that happen within us and make them part of who we are. As we strive for this honesty, our performances will take on a whole new level. We will be able to create a fresh authenticity when we sing that will touch the hearts of those that listen.
Key Concept: Be true to yourself and continually seek to uncover your authentic self.
Key Terms: success
Making Connections: One of the comments from the students that stuck out to me was given by Deborah Stinson. She talked about how the simplicity of the wholistic approach allowed her to more fully connect her voice with her spirit. I have often felt that when I am singing in a healthy and authentic way I make a connection with something deep down inside of me. It has been a long time since I have felt that way. I look forward to applying the wholistic approach which I feel will allow me to make those deep connections with my spirit again.
