Chapter Summary: Practice is super important if we desire to be successful as a vocalist. The way we live each day effects our voice. We must start each day by releasing our bodies, establishing good body alignment, and warming up our voices. We must be sensitive to the needs of the voice day by day and plan accordingly. We must be aware that everything takes time. No matter where we are, our goal should be full development. There are many steps to take in learning a piece of music that are important before we even sing the song. These steps include learning the lyrics and their translations, learning the pronunciation of the words, learning the rhythms, and using parts of the music as vocal exercises. Our mental preparation should always come first. It is beneficial to take the time to mentally work through a piece and sing it in the mind phrase by phrase before singing it out loud. Even though these steps take time, they will be well worth the effort we put into them.
Key Concept: The only real competition we have is our own challenge of developing out voices to their fullest.
Key Terms: Practice, mental preparation
Making Connection: I've always been one to just jump to the last steps of the learning process and start singing the piece right away. I did not know about the worth of all of the steps until this year. It has already made a difference. I can definitely continue to do better, because I get impatient and want to hear what the song sounds like in my voice. However, I know that I will be able to benefit much more as I practice self-discipline and learn each piece in an optimum healthy way.
