Emily F. OB 8: Power and resonance of the voice is really about "carrying quality" rather than volume. Young singers simply don't have the volume and strength that older, more experienced singers do. Trusting in training and doing exercises that strengthen the voice will eventually build the muscles needed for powerful singing. Even smaller voices can have good carrying power by using good technique that leaves resonators open and free to resonate. The ring that carries the voice over other sounds is singer's formant.
Key concept: Power in the voice builds over time with good training and proper use of resonators.
Key terms: carrying quality, chief resonators, pyriform sinuses, fundamental tone, overtones, formant
Making connections: I'm sure I've been pushing for vocal power my whole life. It's hard to believe that my voice will ring and carry without my pushing it. I'm older, so I "should" have more strength, but this chapter helped me see that because of a lot of my bad habits (bunched tongue, excessive jaw movement, lack of molar space, etc.) I'm not getting the ring and carrying quality I want. Those overtones are lost because of the things I do with my voice. I'm finding them more now, in lessons. I can always tell when I'm doing better because Laurie gets really excited about the pingy, ringy sounds I make, and they feel easy! I just wish I could allow that to happen more. I trust that it will continue to improve because it has in the last couple years.
