Emily C.: DYV, Ch. 7

Discover Your Voice: Chapter 7
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: “Singers must train like athletes to establish kinesthetic responses.” Flexibility is absolutely crucial to good singing. As with all of singing, your throat must be free from all tension when singing coloratura. In coloratura singing, because you’ll be moving from one note quickly to the next, it allows your voice time to recover for each note, which is healthier and easier on the voice. Learning to trill should be slow and with smaller increments that gradually extend after mastery of the previous step.

Key Concepts: Daily tension-free practice is key to obtaining agility maintaining skill in the voice. As in all things with singing, learning to do new things takes time and patience.

Key Terms: agility, coloratura, activation threshold, trills

Making Connections: I think the hardest part of singing for me is practicing with discipline; I have a tendency to want to move forward before I’ve mastered the previous step. Studying with Brianna this year, I think I’m finally beginning to understand that results come faster with patient practice than with rushed practice.
