Chapter Summary: It is important to not label growing voices, because it limits our potential if we fit ourselves into a classification while still obtaining technique. When labeling our mature voices we use characteristics like tessitura, color, flexibility, size, and range. Don't be in a hurry to classify your voice. When working with small children, we must be sure to not sing for long periods of time, and have them exercising healthy voice habits free from tension. Singing is fun, and a happy activity. There is no such thing as monotone. If we discover a student is unable to match pitch, ask them to make a sound that is common to them. Then match their pitch with the piano.
Key Terms: Tessitura, monotone.
Key Concepts: We must become familiar with our voices, and try new things vocally to avoid labeling our voices too early on.
Making Connections: I have found that as I sing different repertoire, I develop new skills. I think this is why we don't classify our voices, because they are still changing and growing in many ways. I have found that I have a strong middle range, and I'm currently trying to make my higher range more released.
