Taylee. Summary: There are two opposite qualities in the timbre of the voice: a brightness and a darkness. The goal is to create an equal balance between the two. This balance is called chiaroscuro. In the next few chapters, Smith explains what he calls "inventions", which outline the each opposite ant then the combination of the two.

Making Connections: I really liked what we did for VRH in listening for the chiaro and the oscuro. I felt like a listened better (or perhaps just differently) and heard new things as I was trying to identify each singers timbre.
