Summary: The fifth invention, The Wobble, was designed to free the voice and to build flexibility. In this exercise the voice moves through intervals of fourths, first slowly, then quickly, on an [a] vowel. In theory, it is impossible to hold the voice while singing an interval of a fourth at this speed, and keep the rhythm consistent. The vocal cords must be as relaxed and loose as possible. According to Smith, this exercise will help singers relinquish the illusion of control, and will help them navigate fioratura passages. Smith claims that all voice types, big and small, should be able to sing fioratura.
Key Concepts: The voice must be flexible and loose. This requires some amount of vulnerability from the singer, who must release control. This exercise helps singers release the voice.
Key Terms:
Fioratura - rapid pitches in succession in scales or broken chords.
Making Connections:
This will be a great exercise for me! I'm often guilty of holding/controlling my voice. This reminds me of the yodel-like vocalization Cindy has us do.
