Laura B SS Chapter 9

Chapter Summary: This invention, "getting high" focuses on using the chiaroscuro balance to stretch your vocal range in the higher register. The goal of the invention is to train the voice to naturally and seamlessly modulate between the chiaro (or speaking) part of your voice to the oscuro (or sigh) part of your voice. The exercise consists of an 11-note scale sung on 17 notes. You begin in the lower part of your range and ascend on a major scale 11 notes, after which descending on a dominant 7th chord and arriving at the original pitch. While singing, you move between the vowels 'e' to 'a' to 'o', with 'o' sung at the top of the register and then all the way down. The two qualities of speaking and sighing should be present to some degree on every pitch, but the greater sensation of either will be more present on certain notes. The switching between the two sensations should feel seemless, like driving a really nice automatic car instead of on with manual transmission.
Key Concept: Shifting between the speaking part of our voice to the sigh part of our voice should be seemless and natural.
Key Terms: getting high, sound, speaking vs. sigh sensation, chest and head voice, shift, flute voice, whistle voice, secondo passaggio, stretch, perfect technique, messa di voce
Making Connections: I often find it difficult to freely sing high notes without tension and pressure. I realize that one of the reasons for this is because I haven't been using a chiaroscuro balance to get there. I look forward to using this invention to stretch my limits and sing higher in a healthier way.
