Sarah Brenay - SS - Ch. 7

Chapter Summary: The fourth invention is entitled "Spontaneous Combustion." It is designed to helps singers have a full, efficient onset that will help carry them through the phrase. The body must by poised and balanced for this exercise. The exercise is to sing five detached [a]s on the same pitch, moving randomly throughout the middle range of the voice. The goal is to have a chiaroscuro balance immediately in the onset. We should mimic the sensation that we are about to speak. This exercise is also directed at refining our release. A good way to practice relaxed releases is a quick decrescendo into nothing.
Key Concepts: Healthy singing requires a poised, balanced, energetic physical position, and a sense of spontaneity. The onset of a phrase determines the energy and consistency of the entire phrase. A healthy, clean onset will have no subglottal pressure and will begin with the vocal cords adducted. Releasing the note should not feel pinched or pressed.
Key Terms:
glottal onset
glottal stop
Making Connections:
I'm worried about this invention. I think it will be difficult for me to do this without a lot of pressure and tension. I have discovered that I tense the root of my tongue when I release notes. I don't know why, but I feel that I will have to focus on fixing that before I dive into to this exercise. Even thinking about trying it makes my larynx hurt. I think I'll get Cindy or Liz's help with it.
