Luke Shepherd SS Chapter 4

Chapter Summary: To sing with freedom and authenticity we must first focus on simply speaking. By freeing up our most pure and simple vocal expression, everyday speech, we will be able to then tap into that primal utterance when we begin to sustain vowels at various pitches. Free singing is less entangled than even speech but we must start with our own vernacular speech when learning because it is usually much less entangled with other muscles. Thus we should start at square one: simply speaking simply. Gradually we add on projection, line, and pitch.
Key Concept: Good singing requires that we use the very core of our voice and not call upon extrinsic and unimportant muscles.
Key Terms: First Invention
Refined Vowels
Making Connections: In doing these exercises for myself I realized how entangled my singing voice really has become. I worry too much about trying to sound a certain way that I haven't been using my core voice. These exercises felt really good in my voice and they connected me with my voice in a way I haven't ever felt before.
