Mariah SS 9

Mariah SS 9
Chapter Summary: The invention getting high is a sort of combination and refinement of all of the earlier inventions. Getting high helps the singer to increase their individual capabilities, including expanding their range. Again, "it is not about how high you get, but how you get high" that matters. Smith talks about how on each different note or vowel, the resonance of our sound changes and that we should let it. The key is to allow these "gear changes" to sound natural and fluid. We don't want to force or avoid these shifts but let them happen wherever they happen and learn to develop an "automatic transmission" for these shifts. Smith describes perfect technique as the messa di voce, where a singer piano in head voice to forte in full voice on any pitch. This technique can only happen, though, if the singer has first mastered all of the inventions.
Key Concept: Our voice should be like an automatic transmission and not a stick shift. We need to allow our voices to switch naturally between "gears" and not have a noticeable shift.
Key Terms: getting high, automatic transmission, messa di voce
Making Connections: I need to work on letting my voice shift in a more natural way so that it is less detectable. Right now I can clearly hear when I switch to head or chest voice. I need to allow the shift to happen more naturally which is hard because I know where my voice tends to shift and I anticipate it.
