Luke Shepherd SS Chapter 7

Chapter Summary: The idea behind a good onset is what I believe Cindy meant when she told me that "The sound must be fully formed at its inception". It's very hard to go right if you start wrong. Spontaneity requires that we poised and prepared. With all the ideal conditions present it allows the voice to do something truly spontaneous and free. The five detached sounds exercise in particular focused on this. The purpose of the invention is to learn to phonate so that the entire spectrum of sound is healthily present from the first millisecond. Adjustments must me be made so that we don't get stuck in the rut of doing the same thing over again and thus lose the spontaneous aspect of it. We're always in a battle to get out of our own way.
Key Concept: Regardless of the vowel or consonant sound must be fully formed with all resonance and color immediately from the onset.
Key Terms: Spontaneous Combustion
Onset
Making Connections: I found a major weakness of mine from this chapter. The 'ah' vowel that he calls his magical vowel reveals to me that I set and tighten articulators because I can't fake the ah vowel very well. Bleh, I am doing so much wrong!
