Chapter Summary: “The Sixth Invention, Getting High, is a synthesis of all the previous exercises... It assumes a high level of clean phonation, free-flowing air, tonal balance, spontaneity, and flexibility... extending our vocal range.” Naturally modulate between chiaro and oscuro in this invention. Sound will remain balanced, but sensation of ratio of phonation to airflow will change. “In the lower part of the range, the ratio will lean toward speaking; in the upper range, it will lean much more toward airflow.” From speak to sigh. The jaw and lips should not move when changing pitch and vowels. We need to uncover as many gears as possible to give ourselves plenty of options and freedom when singing. “Perfect technique... is the ability to sing from a pure falsetto to a full-voiced, ringing, balanced sound on any pitch/vowel without feeling/hearing where the shift between the two happens.”
Key Concepts: The main focus of this invention is to be able to modulate freely between the sensations of phonation and airflow, while maintaing the same sound.

Making Connections: I really like how the author describes the difference between what we hear and how it feels--much like how we differentiate between what we do versus what we get. When he says that the sound will remain balanced but that sensation will switch back and forth, that just really clicked in my brain, and I am excited to try this exercise on my own.
