Chapter Summary: The association and implications he uses with Chiaroscuro are a completely new way of looking at the voice for me. Chiaro has to do with speech and it involves the pingy, bright, ringy, forward placement of the voice. Oscuro is all about breath and it involves the dark, resonant, depth, warmth of the voice. We need a perfect balance of both. This is also the only way we can learn to use our whole instrument, our whole body.
Key Concept: To achieve a balanced and colorful sound we must learn to use chiaro, or speech, and oscuro, breath and airflow, in the right ways.
Key Terms: Chiaroscuro

Making Connections: In speaking of using the whole instrument I particularly loved where it said "good singing requires NO localized muscular effort, but bad singing uses localized muscle effort in the jaw, tongue, etc. I feel like all too often I sing from the neck up. I need to involve my whole instrument and I'm eager to learn to do so.
