Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 11

Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 11
Chapter Summary: In our efforts to become super-humans, we often over-exert ourselves. When we are over-conscientious we undermine our ability to be sincere, and freeze with tension. Ristad has found that when she gives students permission to play badly, to act melodramatically, to sing ugly, the free themselves up and actually allow themselves to accomplish what they've been trying for all along. Ristad's theory is that we need to give ourselves permission to make mistakes. We have come to associate mistakes with failure, and failure with shame and anger, instead of understanding mistakes as a part of the learning process.
Key Concepts: Mistakes are a natural part of learning. Allowing ourselves to make mistakes frees us up so we can do it right. Judges can be abolished with humor and spunk.
Making Connections: I can't wait to try this. Next time I run into a wall I'll tell myself to try doing exactly what I don't want to do and see what happens! I think it's a really cool concept, if only to get you do relax. I think that if nothing else, I'd see that making mistakes aren't the worse thing that could happen.
