Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 9 Summary
Chapter Summary: Smith's sixth invention called "Getting High" is all about developing a continuity in the voice and making shifts between range automatic. The goal is to be able to shift gradually in the voice without obvious changes. An important key to this is letting the air flow freely. We shift vowels from [e] to an [a] to an [o] and then back to [e]. The different vowels help us to move through the different ranges.
Key Points:
-The scale should begin in the lower range
-Changes in our range should happen smoothly and feel natural
-In the lower range the ratio will lean toward speaking and the higher range will lean toward airflow.
-This exercise is a balancer for the wobble and spontaneous combustion.
Key Terms:
-flute voice
-whistle voice
Making Connections: I have some major "breaks in my voice" especially in my middle range. I have a hard time negotiating it and think this invention could really help to make my voice more consistent!
