Sarah Boucher Master Class Critiques 10/22
Jake Spjute: Like Cindy said, I noticed that there were moments when Jake was more emotionally connected and it showed in his voice. I like was she said about singing the beginning of the song like you have already been to that emotional place. Once he did this, his phrasing was even better and it seemed like he was riding the breath better. I also liked the imagery of "unicorn sound", when Jake sings in that place you can tell. It was great before but with these few tips his performance got even better! Good job Jake!
Luke Shepherd: Luke did a great job, that was the best I have heard him sing and I think it was because he was connected emotionally. The only thing I noticed was that he was leaning a little bit backwards. I liked hearing about how Luke came to connect with the piece through more specific action oriented words for every phrase. I also liked when Cindy said that "just watching someone convey a mood is boring", because it made me realize how specific I need to be in all of my pieces. Great job Luke!
Laura Berg: Laura's voice is lovely, it has a nice ping to it. When I was listening however, I couldn't quite pinpoint what was wrong but something wasn't gelling right. Cindy pointed out that it was that Laura was skating across those shorter notes. Once she had her only sing the shorter notes, she was able to recognize the tension in her voice and also give each note the proper energy that it deserves. This exercise helped to produce a continuity in the line of the piece and the result was gorgeous! Cindy also had her sing on vi which helped to create more phrasing while also actively singing on every note. Great job Laura!
