Chapter 16 Summary-Although the direction of an experienced teacher can be helpful to a student it should never be seen as an opportunity to open up more, not an excuse to close ourselves off and limit ourselves purely to one theory, method, or solution. Oftentimes we are disappointed when we try a new approach upon the suggestion of a so-called expert that doesn't give us the results we expect. This doesn't mean that we are incapable nor does it mean that the expert is a phony. All it means is that we need to try a different approach. Formulas may get us to loosen up and unleash the talent we already have, but the minute they become a restrictive set of rules that we rely on religiously they will cease to have their desired, liberating effect.
Key Concept- It is dangerous to put to much stock in the opinion of experts and formulas for success that seem to be confirmed by a high amount of evidence. We need to remember that everyone is different and that their is often a myriad of effective solutions to a given problem. In the end we are more able than we think to instruct ourselves and find the solution that works best for us.
Key Terms-Experimentation, Shoulds, Oughts, Insight
Making Connections- I think I need to have more faith in my ability to find solutions to my own problems. It is good to get ideas and feedback from others, but in the end I'm responsible for my improvement and able to find solutions.
