Summary: Spontaneity is a gift. It helps us to drop our self consciousness and launch ourselves into a world of new opportunities. It may even help us in performance because if we aren't afraid to be spontaneous then we can be free to make things up as we go along and improvise in the case of a mistake. It can free us from feeling like there is only one right way to do something and if it isn't exactly right it is the end of the world. Obviously we want a correct and well executed performance but if we mess up, spontaneity is a good replacement for panic. Improvisation is a good exercise in spontaneity. It allows us to drop all our narrow expectations and explore.
Key Concept: When we open up ourselves to improvise and be spontaneous we free ourselves from the narrow boundaries in which we live. We open ourselves up to freer and richer performance.
Key Term: Improvisation
Connections: Okay, I really feel like I could work on this. I am so used to the black and white on the paper and there is only one right way. Really though, this holds me back and makes me more afraid to make mistakes. There are limitless opportunities to explore and while we explore we might find some things we like better that will enrich our performances even more.
