LaeKin Burgess SOHH Chapter 16 Summary

Summary: All of the exploring and discovering we do in our practice needs to eventually lead us back to being on our feet performing. We can't be silly in a serious performance but we can use humor to melt our judges, we can be ridiculous and free in our practice rooms and creative dance our pieces so that when we get up to perform we feel comfortable in our own skin. We own ourselves and so we own our performance and the ability within us to influence others through our music. If we can understand and master ourselves then outside influences can't come and steal our power from us. We become the masters of our music. We must always remember the truth and knowledge we have within us and not just trust our fate to our judges or even our instructors or "the professionals" in our field. We need to trust ourselves that sometimes, we have our own best answers.

Key Concept: Only you can fully understand you. Forget about everyone else and their formulas for success. No one thing works for everyone.  Trust yourself that sometimes you might have the best answer for you.

Connections: It is obviously important to listen to your instructors and to people who have come before you. They have more experience than you and they know things. The trick is to find out what they are saying and how to make it work for you. A good teacher will help you find what makes sense to you so that you can be the best you that you can be.
