Laura B ER Chapter 14

Laura B
Chapter Summary: As performers, we want to do the best that we possibly can. At times, we feel like we need to prove just how good we are. We try to memorize in record and practice longer and harder. This system can cause a lot of extra tension and worry that in turn can be detrimental to our performance instead of help us succeed. We need to give ourselves permission to fail. When we do so, we will realize that giving an unsatisfactory performance is not the end of the world. The people that we perform for will get over it quickly. When we allow ourselves to fail, we are able to then relax and release unneeded tensions. Through doing so, we are then allowing ourselves to more fully succeed.
Key Concept: Give yourself permission to fail so that you can truly succeed
Key Terms: Flop, permission
Making Connections: My whole life, I have always felt like I need to prove that I can do it all. By doing so, I often become extremely busy and extremely stressed. I find it difficult to give myself permission to fail. However, the few times I have given myself such permission, the world doesn't end and I have felt much more relaxed and at ease about things. I need to allow this more of myself, but still continue to work hard. I should not use giving myself permission to fail as an excuse for the work that I should put into something. Instead, I need to remind myself that I will still love and accept myself, even when I do fail.
