Laura B ER Chapter 15

Laura B
Chapter Summary: Improvisation is a natural part of our lives. Most of the things that we do in life are improvised. However, when we are told to improvise on an instrument that we are used to rehearsing on, it can be difficult to allow random sounds to come out at first. We need to approach everything we do with the excitement of a child doing it for the first time. When we allow ourselves to improvise, whether it be on a familiar instrument or with random objects and body parts, we discover new things about ourselves. Improvisation can spark rich ideas that deepen composition,  provide an emotional and physical release, and create a more direct relationship with our instrument.
Key Concept: Improvise!
Key Terms: Free-wheeling improvisation, structured improvisation
Making Connections: As a music therapy student, I have had the opportunity to explore improvisation a little bit and see the effects that it can have in our lives. I have seen how having an improvised drumming dialogue with a child who is non-verbal creates a light and excitement in their eyes when they realize that they can finally communicate freely how they feel. We all need to capture this child-like excitement for life through improvisation. I need to improvise more often to figure out what I am feeling when I have inner confusion. I also look forward to using improvisation to allow myself to deepen my connection with my instrument.
