Naked Voice Chapter
1 Summary:
There is a lot of
good stuff in this chapter that covers a lot of areas. First, sound is created
by three things: a generator, a vibrator, and a resonator. We, as singers are most like brass instruments in how we create
sound. Resonators are controlled passively, so we just need to work on
phonation and breathing. The wholistic approach of singing involves looking at
what we should be doing right, not just fixing errors that we come across. If
we can identify good "habits" of good singing and emulate them, that
is much better than finding quick fixes for just certain situations. The last
two sections deal with the importance of technique in singing and the idea that
we just need to do when we sing. Not evaluate. Evaluation comes before and
after, but when we sing we need to just let it happen. Technique defines us,
and makes us better. Good technique facilitates the best singing.
Key concept: There
are a lot things that we need to understand to strip our voice down, and make
it "naked." Making our voice Naked gives us ability to connect with
the audience.
Key Terms:
Generator, Vibrator, Resonator, Phonation, Airflow, Wholism, "Trick",
Self-Actualization
Making Connections:
I like the idea of Wholsitic singing. Finding ways to promote over all healthy
singing habits, vs. just finding quick fixes in singing. I feel like this
resonates true in all areas of life, especially with a lot of
"choral" technique- singing in tune, blending, listening. You can
apply these principles to all areas of life.
