Chapter Summary: For each instrument, there is a generator, vibrator, and resonator. For the voice, air is the generator, our vocal folds are the vibrator and our nasal cavity, mouth and pharynx are the resonators. "Singing is not a mechanical process." It is good to know how the voice works but that doesn't mean you will automatically know how to sing well. Instead of a conventional approach to singing, we need to go for a more holistic approach. Sometimes we do need to fix things, but mostly we need to focus on what to do right instead of focusing on everything we need to avoid. Singers need to sing in the moment and not show the painting of what they accomplished during practice. They need to be always moving forward and waiting to evaluate until they are finished singing. If we evaluate while singing it keeps us from moving forward.
Key Concepts: Singers need to focus on what to do more than what not to do or what we think will happen. Singers need to wait to evaluate their performance until they are done singing.
Key Terms: wholism, basic instincts, generator, vibrator, resonator, phonation, abduction, adduction, Bernoulli effect, placement, passive, active, holistic medicine, self-actualization
Making Connections: I thought it was a very interesting idea to wait until you are done singing to evaluate. I've always thought about my singing as I went along, so this is a new concept for me. I like the idea of focusing more what to do right than focusing on all of the things you need to avoid. It seems to simplify things a lot.
