Luke Shepherd ER Chapter 16 Summary

Chapter Summary: Experimenting and improvisation must eventually lead us back to our feet, back to the performance venue with an audience full of critics and judges as well as those who wish to see you succeed. Really, with all the experimenting and laughing at yourself and the ridiculous things we do to get free and creative we will eventually be brought to situations where we feel inadequate, judged, tense, not well enough prepared, not masters of our craft. The point is that no technique panacea exists and no single all knowing truth about our music will ever make us totally free and creative enough every single time to get to the breakthrough place we once experienced and want to continue to be. It remains that we are constantly in our own ways and constantly fighting to be ridiculous to get ourselves out of our own ways. The important thing is that we remain fluid and willing to experiment and even fail, because without that mindset we won't ever be free enough to really succeed-this is because success is not a formula but a journey and open mind.
Key Concept: There is no formula that will fix all your performance and practice woes. You must be always willing to experiment and try new things.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: This book has a nice, comforting end. I'll admit, though, I still get frustrated when I think about how there isn't a formula or a method that is proven to work every time always without fail to fix my singing problems. I guess I needed to read this book to force myself to laugh at my expectations and frustrations and just learn to get out of my own way and go for it.
