Luke Shepherd ER Chapter 15 Summary

Chapter Summary: In a way we are all VERY myelinated and practiced when it comes to improvisation because it's a skill we use every single day in even some of the most mundane of tasks. The chapter comes to one of the conclusions I've always drawn about improvisation and that is that you need to get out of your fears way and let your body do what you're already good at doing-being spontaneous and improvising. Good improvisation isn't faked or prepared but it stems out of sincerity and authentic emotion. The wonderful thing about true improvisation is that there are no mistakes. You're not constantly getting at yourself for playing something "wrong" because it's supposed to be spontaneous, NO RULES! This can be so helpful when performance time comes because you won't be bogged down by expectations but you'll be free to explore and even more free to express yourself.
Key Concept: Improvisation is a natural part of who we are and can be used to free ourselves up from rude expectations.
Key Terms: Improvise
Making Connections: I improvise all the time with my voice, at the piano, or with other instruments, but I catch myself sometimes falling into the trap of wanting to sound good or impressive with improvisation and it comes out fake sometimes. Truly free and open improvisation is as natural as breathing and stems from that fearlessness and even willingness to flop that we've already explored.
