Jared D. TNV Chapter 1
Summary-
This first chapter was amazing. I feel like out of all the books so far I am going to connect with this one the most. Wholism involves all aspects of human experience. We have to start with our basic instincts which are breathing and speaking. How many times have teachers told us to breathe before we sing or to sing like we are speaking it? There are three ingredients for making a musical sound; Generator, Vibrator, and Resonator. We have to have a generator which causes movement, the vibrator vibrates because of the movement, and the resonator vibrates sympathetically and causes amplification of the sound. That all sounds very mechanical and unlike most man made instruments are voices can't be considered mechanical. Science tells us what our voices are doing, but it can't be the source of telling us how to do it. Our voices are subject to human nature. Our body, mind, and heart affect our singing ability. The wholistic approach involves the physical, emotional, intellectual, psychological and spiritual state of being. We make all the preparations for singing and in the end we have to take the trip!
Key concept- We must not only treat the symptoms of vocal faults with "tricks" we must find the reason why there were faults in the first place.
Connection - Just because my voice is strong enough to take more abuse than others does not make me a better singer.
