Emily F. SS intro: This introduction makes me excited about this book! Smith talks about honesty in voice and performance, something that we all crave, as singers and as audience members. "The process of learning to sing is intricately connected to [our] personal development." I think this goes for authenticity as well. "Authenticity is a process, not a destination." Singing is a complicated art and science, and how could we help but be changed by the pursuit of learning it!
Making connections: Stephen Smith's personal story resounded with me. When I was a kid, my dear choir teacher told my parents that I could pursue singing as a career if they'd get me some lessons. This wasn't practical, so my parents didn't think it important, so I didn't get lessons. I've tried to observe and teach myself over the years, but just now am to the place that I can give this my best shot. I'd regret not pursuing singing because it is what I love to do more than any other single thing.
