Emily F. lesson 10/15

Emily F. lesson 10/15: I passed off one of my last songs of the semester today. My voice was not in the best shape. My body wasn't feeling well, and I've been trying to fight off the colds that my family has. My voice felt sluggish and heavy, so we worked on a bunch of mixing exercises first. It still never quite felt free and energetic throughout the lesson, but we started working on a song. I revisited an old song ("Lullaby", from the Consul), and it was improved, although still challenging. I did a lot of speaking through the text to get that connected feeling. Then we revisited another song ("Les Berceaux"), and my lack of connectedness and energy prompted Laurie to have me do the "flamingo surfer". I stood on one foot and had my upper body parallel to the floor. This was really successful, so much that Laurie was full-on cheering and I just had to laugh. I continued to sing the song this way. My larynx felt low and effortless, my jaw was totally released, while my body felt strong and energized. It was a successful and productive lesson, even though I wasn't feeling my best to begin with. I have one more song to pass off next week, and I need to work on polishing and revisiting some lyrics from old songs that I'll sing at my recital.
