Emily C.: Lesson Summary, 10/16/13

Emily Cottam
10/16/13 Lesson

This week was memorization pass offs. We started out with a quick warm up on “thee,” making sure to keep my tone high and forward/present instead of low in the throat like I had been doing. We also worked on a “chew hum” to help with lengthening my tone. Brianna also advised me to try and speak in my “pleasant voice” throughout the day in order to prevent vocal exhaustion (because my normal speech tends to be gravelly and less supported). We went over the translation and text memorization for my pieces before singing them. When I went to perform my music, I got a little nervous because I was being tested, and Brianna was able to see how I react in a nervous situation--she told me to ground myself before singing and think happy thoughts when performing. My breathing was relatively shallow, so she had me do some gorilla grunts in between my pieces to reengage my breath. At the end of the lesson, I chose “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal,” “Pieta Signore,” and “Wie Melodien” to be the songs that I will perform at my jury.
