-"How are you?" in a descending arpeggio. I had trouble getting a relaxed, immediate onset. We found that starting with a [y] helped my tongue get into a better position, so we switched to singing "youtube" on the same descending pattern. After a few of those we linked them together so I would sing "youtube, how are you?" without pause for breath in between. The tone kept getting splatty in the higher range so Cindy kept saying "thread the needle!" I have no idea what this means literally, but as a visual it worked really well for me.
-Wobbles on "play." Quickly running through small intervals in succession in an almost yodel like way. My tongue wasn't as happy about the [e] sound. After Cindy reminded me I found more molar space and heightened the vowel, which helped a lot. Cindy also pointed out my breath was gaspy like I was in a hurry and she reminded me to take time to let the air come in on its own.
-[ba]s in a descending arpeggio. These went well since we practiced them so much last semester. So we moved on to an ascending and descending arpeggio on staccato [ba], followed immediately by an ascending and descending legato [ba]. The goal is to get both to feel the same. I didn't get too far into this exercise before the end of the lesson, but will continue working at it! It's a tricky one.
Good stuff! The rest of the lesson was takin care of business like recital rep and stuff. My take aways are let the breath come in and give it enough time to do so, use the [y] sound to find good mouth shape, and keep molar space! My goal for next lesson is to have 6-7 options for a german set and a french set. And to elicit pitch every day. And to learn "I send my heart up to thee"
