Taylee. Summary: All the tricks of weird movements, faces and sounds that we do in the practice room are really only just tricks. The real skill is the ability to not get in our own way with expectations from ourselves and from our peers, teachers, and students. The minute we try to force our way to anything, we lose the ability to find that freedom that is the true goal we are all longing for. Sure, do the crazy vocalizes, the odd movements, and the strange mind games, but remember that they are not the standard to achieve greatness. The path to greatness is only found when we give ourselves permission to be great.
Key Concepts: We must eventually discover our own authority rather than being convinced of the authority of others in order to be successful. "Insight is sudden. It's what we do with our insights that can take a lifetime.
Key Terms: Insight.
Making Connections: I didn't really like the last part of this chapter when Eloise asked Liz, "Liz, if you could sing the way you want, how would you sing?" I know how I want to sing, but I can't seem to get there. Now, I know that it's all in my head and that I'm my own worst enemy, blah blah blah, but how do I get out of my own way when I know that is the problem? I know that the reason I don't sound good all the time is because I'm trying to make it sound that way. So then I really do try and let go, but I'm still "trying". How do you not try? And now, Cindy, you're probably thinking, "Taylee, did you even read the book?" I promise I did. I just feel like I want that ideal sound I have in my head so badly that the desire is getting in my way of complete release. I dunno, perhaps it is just a patience thing, and I need to give myself time.
