Taylee. Summary: When we are born, the first two things that we do are breathing and speaking (crying really). These represent our basic instincts. We speak to communicate. In order to make sound there must be: a generator, a vibrator, and a resonator. By providing air (generator) that passes through our vocal folds (vibrator), sound is then amplified through our various resonators in the body. Singers run into trouble when they try to manipulate their body, which is extremely subjective to itself and its environment. In a wholistic approach, the whole human organism is involved. We must focus our energy on what we do, and not what we want to avoid. The way we use our body is what will define our sound.
Key Concepts: True strength and stability come from surrendering control. Singer's dilemma. Preparation is key to performing with good technique, for when one is in the act one can only observe.
Key Terms: Wholism. Basic instincts. Phonation. Generator, Vibrator, Resonator. Self Actualization. Technique.
Making Connections: There are A LOT of things that are happening while singing. So many things influence it and create it. There is no possible way for me to control it all. When I do try to control things, or manipulate them, I am only preventing them from doing what they naturally do without my help.
