Summary: The third invention is about finding balance. It combines the exercises of Inventions 1 and 2 by using [ni-ne-na-no-nu] on an ascending and descending arpeggio (1 3 5 3 1). The arpeggio begins in the range of the natural speaking voice, and as it ascends, we let the air take over. This exercise should stay withing a comfortable range. Again Smith advises to skip around at odd intervals.
Key Concepts: Many approach chiaroscuro singing in a counter-intuitive manner, squeezing the cords together and then pressing the larynx and jaw down. This does not work. Only by maintaining our speechlike singing and providing generous air can we achieve a proper balance.
Making Connections: Haha! I love these inventions. I do. Can't wait to go try it again. I think that I try to get chiaro by pressing/squeezing and it creates an unhealthy, cutting, abrasive sound. This could be the answer to my problems! Funny how this is exactly what Thomas Glen was saying, only worded differently. Give your voice the right vowel and plenty of air, and it will go wherever you want it to!
