Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 9
Chapter Summary: Ristad found that visualization helped her with skiing, and decided to take her experiment to the next level: having students visualize themselves playing music. She found that if students apply the visualization process correctly, they notice a marked improvement in execution. For the experiment to work the visualization must be as much sensory imagery as visual, and the student must imagine it without the flaws that have been hounding them. This process can save student's an incredible amount of time, and help them get rid of tension and conserve energy.
Key Concepts: Allowing the body and mind to work together saves us time and energy. Visualizing ourselves playing perfectly actually improves our playing in reality.
Key Terms:
kinesthetic - the sense that detects body position and movement
feeling sense - the physical sensation that occurs when you visualize yourself doing a physical activity
Making Connections: I really like this concept. I feel like Cindy already introduced us to this when she taught us about silent singing. It's great because you can save your energy for performing and not tire your voice. But you really do have to have an excellent model to imagine exactly what each note should feel like.
