Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 15

Summary: Improvising scares most musicians to death, but we do it every day, every conversation and movement. In her workshops, Ristad eases students into improvisation by beginning with less intimidating exercises like improvising movement, drumming, and some simple piano improvisation. Improvising tends to give people more freedom of expression in all areas of life, and makes them feel more connected to themselves. It can be very therapeutic for most people.
Key Concepts: Improvisation is not the scary, abstract thing we think it is. We improvise all the time. Transferring that skill over to music just take a little bit of silliness, openness, and the willingness to try.
Making Connection: Let's definitely have a drum circle in class. I love doing things like that! Music loses a lot of it's spontaneity for as I toil at it through the semester. Exercises like this help me detoxify.
