Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 14

Summary: Sometimes just hearing right out that you flopped can be therapeutic. Ya, you flopped, and you're still cool and you lived. We'll all get over it! Allowing ourselves the luxury of failure without judgment frees us up to be daring in our performance and practice. Giving ourselves permission to fail removes our freedom of failure and lets us enjoy the experience of preforming.
Key Concepts: It's ok to flop. If the goal of our practice is to avoid failing, we will have tense, unproductive, unpleasant practice. If we let ourselves play the music and enjoy what we're doing, our experience will be much better. And so what if we do flop?
Making Connections: I loved this chapter. I wish that someone had told me I was a flop when I had a disastrous performance. Just thinking back and saying to myself, "yes I did flop, thank you," made me feel better about the experience. It really doesn't matter. Because that's not what music is about, and it's not what performing is about.
