Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 5 Summary

Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 5 Summary
Chapter Summary: Smith created exercises that help to have free air flow, letting the airflow carry the sound instead of "muscling" it. Smith begins with a downward sigh. We must be in our falsetto and the sound should feel floating. The vibration of the vocal folds should be passive. The next exercise was the siren, in which we ascend to the highest note that we can without tension in the voice. We should round to an o as we ascend. It is not about how high you get but it is about how you get there without any tension. The last exercise is the sigh with a descending five tone scale. The sigh up releases the larynx.
Key Points:
- It is important to develop our lower notes as well because it we can't reach them if there is tension in the voice.
-"It is not how high you get that matters-it's how you get there"
-We shouldn't feel resistance to the airflow
Key Terms:
-falsetto
Making Connections: Laurie and I have been discussing this a lot in my singing! I have so much throat tension and we have worked to keep that larynx low and stable. I am anxious to try these exercises out! I think these will really help me focus on what I need to be feeling in my body when I am trying to find that release. I also like how he connects it with airflow because I have not really thought about that before!
