Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 4 Summary

Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 4 Summary
Chapter Summary: Simply Speaking Simply is Smith's process for using speech to unlock our naked voice. In order to do this we must first speak in our own vernacular. Then we need to speak with projection. Projection does not mean shouting it is just an increased intensity in our normal speech. Next, we need to speak with line. Speaking with line requires continuity and must have forward motion. The fourth phase is to speaking with line on pitch, to relate it to singing. Smith suggests randomly choosing different pitches to sing on. The last phase is an attention to purifying our vowels.
Key Points:
- Everyone needs to purify their vowels, no matter where they are from.
- [i] [e] and [a] require no movement in the jaw and lips but [u] and [o] require movement of the lips
- Part of the reason we need to purify vowels is to get rid of the tension in the base of the tongue.
-Vowels should only be defined by tongue, lips and soft palate.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: This just gives me even more reason to focus on my vowels! I have been trying to focus on this but I need to focus more on it and utilize Smith's advice from this chapter. I never realized that I have tension in the base of my tongue so I want to pay more attention to that as I speak and sing my vowels.
