Chapter 15 Summary- Improvisation can be a helpful exercise for musicians. Not only is it an important skill for musicians to have, but it is an exercise that can have a freeing effect on performers. When we learn how to improvise we can abandon our unhealthy desire to do everything flawlessly. When trying to learn how to improvise we need to realize that improvisation isn't something very new to us. Although it may not always be musical we all do a lot of improvisation when we move, think, and communicate. Improvisation can open our mind and help us find new tactics for practicing, composing, and performing.
Key Concept- Improvisation can be used by musicians as a tactic to free themselves from the pressures of perfectionism. This leads to new perspective with regards to practice and performance and leads to more freedom in both of those areas.
Key Terms- Improvisation
Making Connections- I need to think of ways that I can utilize improvisation in my practice. Even if I may not end up using it in my actual performances it might give me more freedom when I perform and not make me feel so chained down to purely what is written in the score.
