LaeKin Burgess Chapter 13 Summary

Summary: All of us get nervous when we perform and our first instinct is to try to suppress the symptoms of nervousness we get.  Instead of suppressing those nerves we should encourage them to increase, give us their best shot. When we do this we realize there is a limit to all that nervousness and it really isn't going to do us in. We are so used to battering away our problems but sometimes the solution is to embrace them. Instead of feeling like our adrenaline is going to eat us alive we need to take on a more aggressive, confident role in our performance. We may feel like we are acting and faking this confident approach but as we get into it we get out of our heads and our bodies start to feel the music and the audience returns this energy. We have to give ourselves permission to be nervous instead of trying to box it up then use this energy to produce a great performance.

Key Concept: Don't fight yourself. Face your fears and each time you face them you will become more confident. Be familiar with your nerves and instead of stifling them, use them for a thrilling performance.

Connections: This chapter rang true for me through and through. The more I fight my nerves the worse I get. I am going to try to become more familiar with the symptoms of my nervousness and figure out what I need to do to confront and convert them to positive energy rather then letting them eat me alive.
