Master Class 10/1 LaeKin Burgess

Master Class Critiques
LaeKin Burgess
10/1

Amber Denslow: Amber performed a very difficult piece and did quite well with it. Her timbre was airy and her breaths were sometimes high in her body and tight. The piece is really atonal but there are moments where she seems unsure of the pitch. Diction was good. Cindy had Amber select a tonic (even if it wasn't the right one) so that she could give her intervals a frame of reference. This made her intervals more accurate and it was more pleasing to listen to.

Mariah: Very good diction, I could understand what you were saying. Your timbre is very beautiful and rich but your breath is under-energized which makes you flat sometimes. I wish you would open your mouth more on the vowels. I feel like you are covering your voice with your mouth. As Cindy suggested, you could spend less time on the consonants. Your expression was suffering a bit which is why Cindy worked with you on listening to the accompaniment to give your character direction. It was so  much better when you did this. It sounded great!

Ben Shaw: You have a nice voice with a deep, rich timbre but your body is so tense it is almost uncomfortable to watch. Your diction was good as was your intonation. The tension in your body makes your breath tight as well and there is a pushing of the air out on the exhale. Cindy suggested you lean over with your neck and shoulders loose and sing in this position. This looked easier when you were just standing there. Nice work!
