Mariah SS Intro Part II
Chapter Summary: Smith explains his "inventions" or exercises that he's developed. These include: simply speaking simply, free-flowing air, and a balancing act. He also states his four qualifiers for speech: projection, line, defined vowels, and our whole instrument. Smith explains how there should be balance between bright (chiaro) and dark (oscuro). He also explains that when we think of space, it should be upward space, not downward space.
Key Concept: Balancing between chiaro and oscuro with upward space allows a singer to sing with more resonance.
Key Terms: inventions, projection, line, defined vowels, chiaroscuro balance
Making Connections: I need to remember that singing requires my whole body so that I can create a full sound. Also, I need to think upward space more because when people say space I tend to create that lower space that Smith was saying singers should avoid.
