Luke Shepherd Masterclass Critiques 10/1/2013

Amber Denslow: Very challenging and interesting piece-it really exposes the singer. Breathing was mostly good and the lighter texture in your timbre worked some of the time, but the higher register sounded a little thing or reached for. There was some wandering for the pitches (scooping) but Cindy addressed that and you improved SO much after that. I wished that you would shape the phrases and give them direction and climax. The idea of having a tonal center helped you focus every phrase and phrasing as well as intonation improved. Great performance.

Mariah Boyer: The voice had good connection and you had a very pleasant and open sound except for a couple of high notes that fellt jumpy/abrupt. All syllables are not created equally, and the phrases lacked shape. What does this song mean? Some of the words in this piece should carry more weight and give you a lot to work with.  When Cindy focused on the meaning of this piece with you it fixed SO MUCH. Your phrasing improved and I began to get some point of the piece. Very much improved!

Ben Shaw: Good consonant energy and a strong, resonant voice. Your diction was great and the German was pretty good  I've sung this song before so I was listening especially close to certain things and liked a lot of what you did with the dynamic shaping of the phrases. It felt/sounded like you were working really hard with your shoulders/neck. I bet you could still get that strong, open sound and then some if you were able to relax that part of your body. I noticed you do the same thing I do which is I take a good breath but then I lose breath expansion and the position of the inhale as soon as I begin vocalizing. I'm working a lot on breath suspension and learning to sing in the position of the inhale and I think that would help you a lot to have more air and energy. When Cindy had you relax and lay in half while singing your tone relaxed but it revealed how you lose rib cage expansion. You and me are working on the same things. You improved a lot with Cindy's help. Keep heading in that direction!
