Emily F. ER 13

Emily F. ER 13: Almost all of us experience anxiety and nervousness when we perform. This is manifested in different ways in different people, but we all feel it. Instead of fighting to "control" these physical responses, maybe there's a way to accept and even use the energy that comes with being nervous. Recognizing what our individual nerves feel like is the first step to being able to manage and utilize them.
Key Concept: The stress I feel about performance is just my body rising to the challenge!
Making Connections: As I read, I did try to replicate the physical sensations of being nervous, and I didn't like it! It was distinctly familiar and unpleasant, but it did help to be able to identify exactly what was going on in my body. I need to experiment more to see how I can put that energy and discomfort to good use. I know when I sing I have this horrible combination of sounding under-energized/below the pitch, but being super tight and using lots of extra muscle. If I could use my muscles in the right way, in the right place, I could have a lot more success.
