Luke Shepherd ER Chapter 11 Summary

Chapter Summary: Cecily and I are two peas in a pod, I tell you what. A drive for perfection can be motivating and self destructive simultaneously. We must learn that we are not one-dimensional human beings and that our singing voices don't determine our overall happiness or success in life and the universe. The drive to be a 'super person' is common but also can be a trial. It's ok to not be perfect at everything and giving yourself permission to fail at something often frees you up enough to succeed (ironic). This is because we constantly wrestle with how we should be or should act or should do anything that our shoulds rule our lives and actually inhibit us rather than motivate us. Our 'shoulds' have there proper place and never really go completely away, but our shoulds aren't to be used as guilt mechanisms.
Key Concept: We should can or 'shoulds' and allow ourselves to be free, hardworking, and straightforward without overcomplicating things.
Key Terms: "Should"
Making Connections: Yeah, Cecily and I have a lot in common, only I don't have kids and I have both an X and a Y chromosome. I need to stop being so hard on myself with everything I should be doing and what everyone else expects of me and free myself to just be me and tackle what I need to do.
