Luke Shepherd ER Chapter 10 Summary

Chapter Summary: There is no panacea cure all for technique and skill development. This is because teachers teach differently and students learn differently. I know I get caught up in the notion that there must be a right way to do it and I HAVE to learn to do it exactly the same way my teacher did, but that's not the truth. The most important thing is to experiment and come to understand the concept, not just replicate it or take what you see someone else doing at face value. It's more about self-discovery, especially with singing. Everybody's voices are different and unique, and while certainly there are techniques and ways to approach certain skills that are helpful for most that doesn't mean that everybody can learn in the exact same way and that knowing how it feels in someone elses body conceptually means that you will know how it MUST feel in your body.
Key Concept: Everybody learns differently, so experiment and discover!
Key Terms:
Making Connections: I still get caught in the trap of trying to have someone else explain to me how my voice should be working and attempting to replicate the way they feel in myself. If you haven't tried it trust me... it doesn't work. The breakthroughs that I have made along the way with my own voice have largely come as I was experimenting on my own with something and being free enough to get my voice to do it on its own terms. Surely I take direction from my teacher but Cindy readily admits, "It will feel differently in your voice than in mine." which gives me comfort knowing that my voice is different so I need to discover it myself.
