Chapter Summary: In any aspect of life, it is important to find a balance between extremes. This also carries over into singing, as we seek to find a balance between the piercing chiaro and the dark oscuro. An invention that the author describes is to arpeggiate ni-ne-na-no-nu at a comfortable pitch, beginning in the natural speaking range. The higher we go, the more it should feel like sighing and releasing air. Every pitch should have the full quality of speaking and sighing, with the sensation of balance changing as we go throughout the range. We must turn over all of our efforts to breath to create the freedom necessary to get through the difficult parts in the range. Pure vowels is also crucial in this exercise, because it will allow the voice to speak clearer and the air to flow more smoothly.
Key Concept: "Consistent airflow is the key to maintaining a good balance, and vowel definition is the key to consistent airflow."
Key Terms: balance, extremes, arpeggio, passaggio
Making Connections: Finding balance in life is so important and something I sometimes struggle with. While singing, sometimes I focus so much on getting my voice in a bright 'pingy' place that I sometimes neglect the importance of the breath. I look forward to applying the arpeggio more fully into my practice with a clearer understanding of the benefit that it can have in my vocal quality.
